On the subject of time, did you know there is a movement to see Western calanders scrapped in favor of the 13 month Mayan Calander and for a very good reason.
The way of the mystics follows many paths and explores realms of the mind most others never visit. Their aim is to find truth and their methods can include self deprivation; sweat lodges; dancing; whirling; psycho- active substances; chanting; & meditation; just to name a few.
Drugs are not the answer but they do have a historical connection to mystics, sages, & shamen that dates back thousands of years.
When used as a sacred tool, treated with respect, combined with prayer and an honest desire to reach higher states of consciousness, it is possible for the user to experience normally non-accessable deep religious insights, over come the fear of death, and even attain a glimpse of Enlightenment.
Of course convincing a psychologist or a cop that any visions of another reality are real will be about as successful as if you witness a flying saucer land in the middle of no where and you are all alone. Could this be what is meant about not throwing your pearls before swine ?

Fritjof Capra is very wise and has put together some amazing scientific evidence that validates early vedic philosophy. Carlos Castanada wrote 'The Secrets of Don Juan' which is all about the power of peyote.
If you want a real head buzz, read "Earth Ascending" by Jose Arguelles, who manages to illustrate a link between the DNA Code, the I- Ching, and the Mayan Calander that basically proves the existence of Cosmic Consciousness (although his more recent work is a bit too far out to remain credible).
Allan Watts was an early pioneer that explored the mind postulated that Eastern philosophy has much in common with modern psychotherapy; Aldus Huxley is most famous for his writings but he also fulfilled his mothers dying wish by giving her a dose of LSD to go out on.
